This past winter season has been really bad for us when it comes to cough and colds. We have been battling symptoms of coughing and sinus congestion, just to name a few. We have tried many different over the counter medicines with no avail. One night as I was browsing Facebook, I ran across an article talking about cough syrup made from natural ingredients. I had mentioned it to my boyfriend and said that I would like to try to make some. I was thinking what could it hurt since the ingredients were all natural.
A few weeks ago, while at the local store, I located some raw honey. I picked it up and decided that this would be the day I would try to make the syrup. There are two types of syrups that I made: lemon ginger and orange clove. For the lemon ginger you will need the following:
Pint mason jar
1 tsp ginger
Pint mason jar
1 tsp Clove
Cut the lemon into slices and again in half. For the oranges you will need to cut slices into quarters. In the empty jar, add the lemon or orange slices, either ginger, or clove, and some honey. Stir the mixture together and finish filling the jar with honey. Stir the mixture again and place a lid on the jar. You will notice that the mixture is thick, but once you let it stand for 3 to 4 hours, the citrus releases into the honey and will cause the honey to break down into a thinner syrup. Take one tablespoon to help reduce coughing as needed. You can also add this mixture to hot tea to soothe a sore throat and help reduce coughing.
